Fruit Flies Be Gone

When you go in your kitchen to find that it has been overrun with fruit flies, it can ruin your day. It's extremely difficult to cook in a kitchen when you continuously need to shoo those little pests out of your face and worry about them landing in the dish you are trying to prepare. The information here will help you learn how to prevent fruit fly infestations in the future and how to get rid of the ones you are currently being bothered with.

Preventing a fruit fly infestation

When it comes to preventing fruit flies from coming into your kitchen, you want to keep the kitchen as clean as possible. Not only does this mean the obvious things such as keeping the dishes clean and mopping the floor, but it also means taking extra, not so obvious steps.

You want to thoroughly rinse out all containers that had juice, soda, alcohol or other types of flavored drinks in them. Also, wash all your dish towels regularly and disinfect your kitchen sponges daily by putting them in the microwave for a minute or so.  Wipe the counters down after each use and take the trash out every night. Keep all containers tightly sealed and don't leave ripe fruit sitting out on the counters.

Getting rid of fruit flies

When you have fruit flies currently in the kitchen you want to begin the process by giving it a good spring cleaning. This means wiping down all the surfaces with disinfectant, making sure all jars are cleaned on the outside, keeping all towels and sponges clean, cleaning the floors, taking the food out of all the cupboards and cleaning them, and cleaning the tray of the dish rack. You also want to clean the canisters and any nick knacks displayed on the countertops and clean anything else that may have come into contact with even the smallest amount of food.

You can set a trap for the fruit flies that will do a great job of getting rid of a lot of them. Take a jar with a lid and add apple cider vinegar to the jar. Poke very small holes in the lid and put it back on the jar. The fruit flies will go down into the jar and they won't be able to find their way out. Eventually, they will land in the apple cider vinegar where they will drown. If you have a bad problem, you may want to put a few of these jars around the kitchen. If you can't get a handle on things, then it may require a call to a pest control company.
